2005: A man who tried to scale a drainpipe at a schoolgirl's home and sent her abusive text messages has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
The defendant, Darren Lomas, aged 27 and from Bag Lane, Atherton, had a charge of raping the girl, who was 14, dropped but admitted to harassing her.
Prosecutor Richard Heap revealed that Lomas, who was on licence after serving nine years for rape, robbery, and indecent assault, was observed climbing a drainpipe at the residence.
He was subsequently apprehended and returned to prison.
Afterward, he sent the girl offensive texts, including one falsely claiming he was HIV positive and suggesting she could become infected.
He also sent threatening messages, warning her to watch her back and stating that her stepfather was 'a dead man walking.' Defense attorney Michael Brogan stated that Lomas was genuinely remorseful, attributing his behavior to excessive drinking and emotional distress, which he admitted was misdirected toward the girl.
