2006: NEPHEW JAILED FOR KNIFE ATTACK
2006: A nephew who attacked his uncle with a knife has been sentenced to an indefinite prison term.Aaron Hamer repeatedly stabbed Lionel Pilkington after smashing a cup over his head.
Judge Elizabeth Steel stated that Hamer represented a significant danger to others and imposed an indeterminate sentence for public protection.
Liverpool Crown Court was informed that 28-year-old Hamer, from Lynwood Grove, Atherton, had a history of assaulting his uncle, although Mr Pilkington had not previously reported these incidents to the police.
However, on October 13 of the previous year, Hamer attacked his uncle with multiple stabs, which led to his hospitalization.
Hamer admitted to charges of wounding Mr Pilkington with intent and causing him actual bodily harm through assault.
During proceedings, prosecutor Philip Astbury explained that Hamer had moved in with his uncle in September last year, and within a week, an altercation ensued during which Hamer punched his uncle in the head, rendering him unconscious.
The attack resulted in a black eye and a swollen cheek, but Mr Pilkington chose not to file a police report.
On the day of the assault, Hamer was visibly agitated and increasingly distressed, smashing a cup over his uncle's head and causing a cut.
According to Mr Astbury, Mr Pilkington noticed Hamer holding a knife but did not remember being stabbed; he did recall Hamer threatening to stab him.
Police responded to the scene and found Mr Pilkington had been stabbed multiple times in the left shoulder, requiring eight stitches.
The victim also had injuries to his left foot and scalp lacerations from the cup.
He was kept in hospital overnight for treatment.
Hamer’s defense lawyer, Paul Becker, stated that Hamer, who has no prior violent convictions, lost his temper and deeply regrets his actions.
A psychiatric assessment confirmed that he was not suffering from any mental disorder.
