SUTTON COLDFIELD MAN JAILED FOR KILLING MOTHER AND HIDING HER BODY FOR WEEKS
Darren Hammond, aged 41, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after being convicted of manslaughter for killing his 81-year-old mother, Beryl Hammond. Her body was discovered in their home several weeks after her death when neighbors reported a strong odor coming from the property.
Initially, Hammond denied any involvement in her death, but at Birmingham Crown Court, evidence proved he had concealed her body, leading to a manslaughter conviction.
Neighbors recounted that Hammond had a history of violence and had assaulted his mother, though she later retracted her complaints.
The post-mortem report was inconclusive due to her advanced decomposition but indicated she had sustained 10 broken ribs, with no clear cause determined.
Hammond had been reported to police numerous times when his mother accused him of violent acts, though she eventually withdrew those reports.
Authorities revealed that he had sent messages indicating an escalating sense of anger and frustration toward his mother, and he claimed to have only realized she was dead three days before police arrived.
The court concluded Hammond’s actions to hide her death were aimed at avoiding justice, which ultimately led to her tragic death.
