MAN JAILED FOR STRANGLING EX-GIRLFRIEND IN CARAVAN
A man who beat and strangled his former partner in a caravan has been sentenced to two years in prison.
Daniel West, aged 37, was convicted after he squeezed his ex-girlfriend's throat until she feared she would pass out during a late-night attack at Tattershall Lakes caravan park in Lincolnshire on December 20.
The Lincoln Crown Court heard that the victim was unable to report the assault immediately because West took her phone during an argument over a social media post.
West, who has no fixed address, pleaded guilty to multiple charges including assault by beating, assaulting an emergency worker, intentional strangulation, and criminal damage.
In an impact statement read in court, the victim recounted how she felt trapped as West started the assault by punching her in the caravan's toilet, then kicked her in the ribs and head, before he pressed on her throat in the bedroom, causing her to believe she was going to pass out.
Police arrived at 6:00 AM after the victim escaped and went to security, finding West intoxicated and spitting at officers, while also urinating in his cell.
The court heard that West had previously breached a suspended sentence from March last year for malicious communication and assault.
An advocate for West described the relationship as 'toxic' and acknowledged that violence was not justified, while also stating West would agree that a restraining order was appropriate.
The judge sentenced West to two years and imposed a restraining order forbidding contact with the victim for ten years.
Additionally, West admitted to breaching his earlier suspended sentence.
The court highlighted that West placed his arm across the woman's throat and suffocated her, nearly causing her to lose consciousness and preventing her from leaving the scene.
