DANIEL NEWSOME
Daniel Newsome, aged 30, who has a documented history of domestic violence toward previous partners, created a hostile environment in their home that he described as a dictatorship.
Throughout their toxic relationship, Newsome engaged in numerous degrading, humiliating, and occasionally violent acts, such as pulling her by the hair, threatening to push her off a staircase banister, pushing her down steps, and controlling her clothing choices, as detailed in court.
Prosecutor Jemima Stephenson explained that the couple had been together for approximately three years, although their relationship was marred by unfounded accusations of infidelity against the victim.
In August last year, at their residence on Britannia Street, Newsome accused her of infidelity, leading to a violent altercation.
During this incident, he pulled her by the hair onto the bathroom floor, spat at her, and then dragged her onto the landing, attempting to push her over the banister.
Subsequently, he pushed her down some stairs while shouting at her.
The victim sustained scratches, bruises, and a bleeding nose.
She described Newsome's behaviour as having a violent outburst roughly every three days, during which he would demand money aggressively to support his cannabis use, leaving her destitute.
She lent him significant sums of money that resulted in debt and financial hardship for her family.
Newsome's jealousy and critical remarks about her appearance increased, often calling her “fake” and preventing her from going for beauty treatments, destroying her makeup, and confiscating her grooming products.
The psychological and physical toll left her looking worn and underweight.
Newsome's aggressive language and behaviour virtually barred her from social outings, and he prohibited her from seeing her mother, leading her to contact friends secretly.
He also caused property damage, smashing glass in walls and doors, destroying household items like her clothes and hair straighteners, and damaging the banister.
After enduring this ordeal, she broke off the relationship, left with very little money, and eventually told her mother, who contacted the police.
In February this year, police arrested Newsome at a B&B in Scarborough.
Authorities recovered abusive messages from his phone, accusing her of infidelity, and took photographs of her injuries, which included multiple bruises.
Newsome, who was then living in Leeds, pleaded guilty to one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, two counts of coercive or controlling behaviour, and property damage, with these pleas entered on the day of trial.
He also admitted possessing cannabis, which was dealt with separately in magistrates’ court.
An allegation of strangulation was dropped.
Sentencing occurred via video link on August 22, with Newsome in custody.
The victim, in a court statement, expressed the profound impact of his actions, noting she was prescribed antidepressants for anxiety and was still trying to repair her damaged property.
She shared feelings of nightmares, fear of future relationships, and a sense of vulnerability, describing her experience as terrifying and frightening.
Newsome, of Royal Park Terrace, Hyde Park, has prior convictions totaling 35 offences, including breaches of restraining orders, property damage, and assaults on previous partners.
His solicitor cited drug use as a contributing factor.
Judge Sean Morris, the Recorder of York, condemned Newsome's conduct, highlighting his extensive record of violence against women.
He noted the defendant's deep-seated issues with women and emphasized that his criminal behaviour had made many women's lives miserable.
Due to Newsome's appalling criminal history, the judge sentenced him to two years and four months in prison and imposed a five-year restraining order to keep him away from the victim.
