SOUTHAMPTON MAN JAILED FOR LIFE IN SHOCKING SHAMPOO BOTTLE MURDER
A man named Daniel McBride, aged 44, residing in St Denys Road, Southampton, has been convicted and sentenced for the brutal murder of 51-year-old Majella Lynch. The court found McBride guilty of perpetrating a "horrific and sadistic" sexual assault involving a shampoo bottle, which led to Lynch's death from internal injuries after the shampoo bottle was discovered lodged in her abdomen in April 2014.
The judge at Winchester Crown Court sentenced him to life imprisonment, with a minimum term of 29 years before parole eligibility.
During sentencing, Mr Justice Akenhead criticized McBride for refusing to leave his cell when summoned to court, which was seen as a display of "a total lack of courage or remorse or even respect toward his victim." He characterized the crime as "brutal, merciless, horrible and disgusting," targeting an "essentially decent but very vulnerable woman" in her own home.
The court highlighted McBride's extensive criminal background, including crimes such as aggravated burglary, wounding with intent, robbery, and possession of a shotgun.
McBride had previously been given a life sentence in the late 1990s for these crimes and was on license at the time of the attack.
The judge noted that Lynch came from a happy family, worked at the Coal Board and NHS, and was well-liked, but after her parents died and her son was given up for adoption, she suffered from chronic alcoholism and was a well-known figure in her area.
The court also described McBride’s activities on the night before the murder as involving cocaine, Viagra, and cash, with CCTV evidence showing him outside Lynch's flat appearing "sexually frustrated and fuelled by both alcohol and drugs." Court authorities described his attack as "horrific, humiliating and sadistic," leaving Lynch with devastating internal injuries.
The case was widely covered, emphasizing McBride’s violent past and the brutal nature of the crime.
