GREENOCK MAN JAILED FOR HORRIFIC RAPE AFTER ONLINE CONTACT
A sex attacker named Daniel Craig, aged 32, who had engaged in an online contact with a woman before subjecting her to a horrific attack in a flat in Greenock in May 2022, has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Craig was convicted of raping the woman following a trial in Paisley.
During the sentencing at the High Court in Glasgow, Judge Sheena Fraser stated, "You gained the woman's trust and abused that.
You subjected her to a repeated attack during the course of one night, taking advantage of her obvious vulnerability." She emphasized the significant impact on the victim, citing her statement and a pre-sentencing report which indicated Craig's refusal to accept responsibility and continued denial of his actions.
The judge decided on an extended sentence because she believed the standard period of supervision would not be adequate to protect the public.
Craig will also be supervised for two years after his release and has been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Additionally, he is banned from approaching or contacting the woman for the next 15 years.
Prosecutors outlined that Craig made sexual remarks, groped the woman, removed her lower clothing, and physically grabbed her during the attack.
Defending KC Gary Allan highlighted Craig's clean criminal record, his family responsibilities, and support from his partner.
