COVENTRY MAN GETS LIFE FOR CHATHAM FAMILY ARSON AND MURDERS
A man from Coventry, named Danai Muhammadi, was found guilty of killing his son, estranged wife Melissa Crook, and her father Mark Crook in a fire set within their residence in Chatham.Muhammadi, along with his accomplice Farhad Mahmud, who was also convicted of three counts of murder, was declared guilty following a trial held at Maidstone Crown Court.
The victims—Melissa Crook, aged 20, her infant son Noah, and her father Mark—perished in the blaze, which lacked a viable escape route, leaving no possibility for survival.
Court evidence revealed that Muhammadi was consumed by feelings of "spite, anger and resentment" when he and Mahmud poured petrol through the Crook family’s letterbox.
The pair used a garden spray container to spray petrol, it was stated.
The presiding judge, Mr Justice Sweeney, sentenced them to life imprisonment, with Muhammadi’s case indicating a potential for a lengthy custodial term.
Prosecutors described the attack as "wicked" and "well planned," motivated by jealousy due to a breakdown in Muhammadi’s relationship with Melissa.
Although Muhammadi denied any involvement initially, the conviction was based on strong evidence, including CCTV footage that led to his arrest shortly after the fire.
The court also determined that Muhammadi was responsible for two attempted murders—those of Melissa’s family members, Amanda Crook and Bohdan Crook—who survived the blaze.
Emma Smith, Muhammadi’s girlfriend and an implicated party, was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter.
The sentencing hearings were anticipated for early July.
This case is regarded as one of the most challenging for the jury, with the judge underlining the brutality of the act and its profound effect on the victims’ family.
