BIRMINGHAM TEACHER COUPLE NEGLECTS SON TO DEATH, COURT HEARS
Two teachers, Damion Thomas, aged 48, and Tamara Thomas, aged 45, stand trial accused of gross negligence manslaughter and child cruelty after neglecting their 12-year-old son, Joshua Thomas, leading to his death. The court heard that Joshua collapsed at home on December 9, 2022, suffering from untreated and undiagnosed Type 1 diabetes which resulted in diabetic ketoacidosis.
Damion, who had lived with the condition himself, and Tamara, both certified teachers, failed to seek urgent medical help despite symptoms and warning signs.
Damion was on a pathway to returning to work, having previously taught at Solihull Academy and held a safeguarding role.
The parents did not trust Birmingham Children's Hospital and allegedly avoided medical intervention for their son.
The court was told they did nothing when Joshua was weak, lethargic, and unresponsive, with Tamara only calling emergency services after significant delay.
Damion later claimed to be unaware of Joshua's critical condition until he saw paramedics at home.
