A convicted abuser, facing his third domestic offence against the same woman, has received a prison sentence.
Craig McLeod, 44, of Perth, was initially charged with a three-day period of abuse in October 2024.
He was found guilty of assault that involved grabbing his victim by the throat and causing her to fall down stairs at a different address in the city.
At his sentencing hearing, his lawyer informed the court that McLeod had moved to Pitlochry in an attempt to start anew, distancing himself from previous social influences and negative peers.
The court also noted that McLeod was dealing with underlying issues related to drug and alcohol misuse.
Sheriff Wyllie Robertson stated to McLeod, “This is your third conviction involving the same complainant.
You have previously been sentenced to a community disposal, including supervision, a non-harassment order, and a restriction of liberty order, yet your offending has continued.” The sheriff emphasized that due to the severity of the offences and McLeod’s criminal history, he was unsuitable for alternative sentences such as unpaid work or participation in the Caledonian Programme for male domestic offenders.
He specified that supervision via a community payback order would not be sufficient, and no other non-custodial option was appropriate.
Consequently, McLeod was sentenced to eight months in prison, with a 30-month non-harassment order also imposed to prevent further offences.
