A man named Craig Dorney, aged 35, has been convicted of serious sexual offences following a disturbing incident involving an assault and rape of a young woman in Lewisham. The incident took place on the night of Saturday, June 29, when the victim, a woman aged 27, was traveling in a taxi through Lewisham. According to reports, she encountered Dorney, who had just stepped out of another taxi nearby. An interaction ensued between the two, which quickly escalated into a violent assault. Before she could alert the authorities, Dorney subjected her to a brutal attack, including rape.
During the assault, the victim managed to record a portion of the incident on her mobile phone, capturing their conversation on video. This crucial piece of evidence played a significant role in the subsequent investigation. Law enforcement officials acted swiftly, and within 24 hours, they identified and arrested Dorney. The police collected evidence from various sources, including CCTV footage from the area, forensic analysis of clothing, bedding, and electronic devices such as his phone. Additionally, receipts from the taxi and Dorney’s clothing were examined to establish his involvement.
On July 28, Craig Dorney was formally charged with rape and two counts of sexual assault. His court appearance took place at Woolwich Crown Court on December 2. After a thorough trial, the jury found Dorney guilty of all charges on December 6. The court subsequently sentenced him to a prison term of seven years, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
Detective Constable James Hart, who led the investigation, expressed his thoughts on the case, stating: “We hope this sentence brings some level of justice for the victim-survivor who bravely came forward and helped us catch her perpetrator in what must have been extremely distressing circumstances. We’d like to thank the victim-survivor for providing vital evidence at the start of our investigation, as well as the other witnesses who provided statements.”
The Metropolitan Police described Dorney as ‘a sexual predator who targeted a vulnerable woman,’ emphasizing their commitment to combating violence against women and girls. They also highlighted the importance of support services for victims of sexual assault, directing those in need to resources such as rapecrisis.org.uk or the national helpline at 0808 802 9999, which are available to provide assistance and guidance during difficult times.
