MAN RAPED WOMAN IN SICKENING ATTACK WHILE SHE SLEPT THEN FLED SCOTLAND
A man from Glasgow who absconded while on trial for rape has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison.Connadh McGregor assaulted a woman at his residence in Dennistoun during late July 2022.
According to prosecutors, the victim was asleep and unable to give consent at the time of the assault.
The 26-year-old was scheduled to stand trial in August of the same year.
However, McGregor failed to appear before the court, leading to the case being adjourned.
It was later revealed that he had left the UK before being apprehended on a warrant and subsequently returned to stand trial.
McGregor appeared at the High Court in Glasgow via video link from HMP Barlinnie, where he was found guilty of rape.
He denied the charges brought against him.
In addition to the rape allegation, McGregor faced accusations of abusive behaviour towards the woman.
These included stalking her through phone calls and social media, controlling her clothing choices, showing up unannounced at her home, and arranging food deliveries.
During the sentencing, Judge Douglas Brown noted that the woman was 'very distressed' upon awakening from the attack.
He stated, 'She spoke in her testimony about feeling violated and broken.
In her victim impact statement, she described ongoing anxiety, nightmares, and a fear of sharing a bed with anyone.' The court also imposed an indefinite sex offender registration requirement on McGregor and prohibited him from contacting or approaching the woman for the next 10 years.
