WREXHAM MAN JAILED FOR ATTEMPTED SEXUAL CHAT WITH DECOY
A man named Colin Roomes, residing on Edward Street in Wrexham, appeared at Mold Crown Court for sentencing after previously admitting to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.
The court heard that on August 17, Roomes messaged a Facebook account under the alias Holly Baxter, claiming 'hi'.
Holly was in fact a decoy account set up by an adult, and she told him she was just 14.
Despite this, Roomes continued talking to her, with the chat turning to sexual topics.
He called her a "cutie" and expressed intentions to have sex with her when she turned 18.
He also inquired about her residence and relationship status, with the judge condemning his views as 'perverted.' Fortunately, the person on the other end of the conversation was an adult who set up the decoy account, and the chat contents were handed to police.
Roomes was arrested in November last year following this.
His defense solicitor acknowledged his remorse and insight into his offending, requesting a community sentence with rehabilitative support.
However, the judge characterized his behavior as 'completely unnatural' and 'perverted,' especially given the 30-year age gap and his intent to have sex with a minor.
The court imposed a two-year community order, including a 45-day program, 45 days of rehabilitation activities, an £800 fine, and ordered him to pay £1,200 in costs plus a victim surcharge.
Roomes was also required to register as a sex offender and was subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same period.
