COLIN RIMMER FROM MORETON SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL BATHROOM ATTACK IN LIVERPOOL
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Moreton, Colin Rimmer, aged 51, faced justice at Liverpool Crown Court for a violent assault that left his former partner traumatized and fearing for her safety. The incident occurred on the evening of March 10, 2023, when Rimmer, who had spent the night drinking, forcefully entered the upstairs bathroom of his ex-partner's home, located on Snowden Road in Moreton.According to court proceedings, Rimmer barged into the bathroom while the woman was taking a bath, asserting his dominance by declaring he would 'go where he wanted.' Without warning, he grabbed her and forcibly pushed her head underwater, an act that caused her to struggle fiercely and scream for help. During the altercation, she managed to kick over a candle, which added to the chaos in the confined space.
The commotion was heard by her 18-year-old son, who rushed into the bathroom and intervened, grabbing Rimmer in an attempt to stop him. Despite the intervention, Rimmer insisted he had done nothing wrong. When the teenager threatened to call the police, Rimmer's demeanor changed dramatically; he became visibly distressed and abruptly left the house, claiming he intended to kill himself. He was later arrested in the early hours of the morning following this incident.
Further investigations and interviews with the woman revealed a long history of abuse inflicted by Rimmer over several years. The court heard that Rimmer exerted control over her finances, isolated her from friends, and discouraged her from driving to restrict her independence. The woman recounted specific instances of violence, including a slap to her face and threats to 'stick her six feet under' after suspecting she had contact with another man. On one notable occasion while driving to Wales, Rimmer threatened her with a comment that he could take her life in a moment before aggressively jerking the steering wheel, an act described by Judge Richard Pratt as 'particularly sinister.'
During the sentencing, the victim provided a heartfelt statement, revealing the lasting psychological scars left by the attack. She described experiencing vivid flashbacks of Rimmer drowning her in the bath, which she compared to a horror movie. She admitted she has not returned to the bathroom since the incident and expressed her fear of ever taking a bath again, highlighting her reliance on a downstairs shower for her daily needs.
Rimmer pleaded guilty to three charges, including non-fatal suffocation and coercive and controlling behavior. He appeared in court via video link, sobbing throughout the proceedings. Judge Pratt emphasized the seriousness of Rimmer's actions, noting they were 'particularly serious offences' rooted in a pattern of abusive conduct. As a result, Rimmer was sentenced to a total of four years and five months in prison, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and the impact on his victim.
