A man named Colin Morrison, aged 30, was convicted of grievous bodily harm after he attacked a woman outside a Newcastle shop. The incident occurred on March 29, after Morrison approached the woman and her mother in a store on Welbeck Road.
The victim, who had only recently met Morrison, was told by him, 'This is because of your brother,' before he punched her and left her unconscious.
Morrison ran into another store immediately after the attack.
The woman sustained a serious facial injury that required screws and a metal plate to be fitted during surgery.
She also suffered loss of sensation on one side of her face and an infection.
Morrison has a lengthy criminal history with 42 previous convictions covering 59 offences, including racially aggravated assault, robbery, and other assaults.
During his court hearing at Newcastle's Moot Hall, Morrison pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment.
The court's recorder described him as 'utterly self-centred' and imposed an indefinite restraining order.
The attack was characterized as impulsive by his defense, noting that Morrison was intoxicated at the time and has a difficult background with PTSD and a personality disorder.
