INVERNESS MAN DETAINED INDEFINITELY AFTER KNIFE ATTACK ON MOTHER
A man named Colin Millar, aged 29, was ordered to be detained without a limit of time at a high-security psychiatric hospital following a serious knife attack on his mother in Inverness. The incident occurred on August 2, 2018, at her home in Sinclair Park, where he was accused of attempting to murder Catherine Millar, aged 58.
It was alleged that he repeatedly struck her on the head with a knife, resulting in severe injury, permanent disfigurement, and risking her life.
Millar claimed he was suffering from a mental disorder at the time, and expert reports supported that he was not criminally responsible, leading to his release from trial.
He was found unfit to stand trial.
The court was told that Millar has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and an autistic spectrum disorder.
A forensic psychiatrist from the State Hospital at Carstairs stated that Millar was a complex individual who had committed a potentially fatal offence.
Millar is currently on antipsychotic medication and is detained at the South Lanarkshire institution.
The psychiatrist emphasized that if he were not detained, he could pose an imminent risk of harm to the public.
The court heard that the mother awakened to find Millar striking her twice in the head with a knife while she was sleeping on a sofa.
She managed to escape and was hospitalized with two stab wounds to her head.
Although the case is unusual because Millar had no past violent record, the judge ordered his detention at the State Hospital, along with suppression and restriction orders.
