DENTON MAN GETS SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ASSAULT
Colin Hewitt, aged 52, from Haughton Green, Denton, was convicted at Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, of causing grievous bodily harm after brutally attacking his partner in front of their ten-year-old child.
The assault began following a dispute over smoking inside the flat, where the victim went outside to have a cigarette, breaking Hewitt's rule.
During the incident, Hewitt headbutted her and then stood on her neck until she choked.
The violence escalated as he dragged her by her hair and struck her up to five times.
Their young daughter pleaded for Hewitt to stop as she witnessed her mother being dragged and assaulted, with neighbors also hearing her screams.
Hewitt inflicted severe injuries, including a fractured cheekbone and misaligned teeth, and she lost consciousness during the attack.
She described Hewitt as having a violent temper due to drinking, feeling anxious, paranoid, and changed physically and emotionally since the incident.
Hewitt admitted to causing grievous bodily harm but was sentenced to 22 months in jail, suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 31 sessions of a 'Building Better Relationships' programme, along with 200 hours of unpaid work and a three-year restraining order preventing contact with the victim.
