WIDNES RAPIST JAILED FOR SIX YEARS
A RAPIST has been jailed for six years.Ciaran Devlin, aged 28, of Hampton Court Way, Widnes, was sentenced after being found guilty of raping a teenage girl at his flat.
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, October 16, 2011.
The victim, an 18-year-old woman, returned to his home with a group of friends after a night out in Liverpool.
They carried on drinking and the woman went into the bathroom after feeling unwell.
Devlin went in to help her and then raped her in one of the bedrooms.
The victim reported the incident to the police and Devlin was arrested on October 19.
Devlin denied the rape charge but was found guilty after a seven-day trial at Warrington Crown Court.
DS Adam Waller, of the Dedicated Rape Unit, said: "Devlin′s actions that night were despicable and the sentence, which was handed down, reflects this.
Rape and sexual assaults are amongst the most traumatic of crimes and we would like to thank the victim for the courage she has shown throughout the investigation, particularly in giving evidence during the trial, which ensured that Devlin was convicted of this serious crime.
This incident has had a big impact on the victim and the fact that Devlin made her recount her ordeal by enduring a trial further exacerbates the impact that this case has had upon her.
We hope that the guilty verdict and the sentence handed down by the court will help bring about a degree of closure for the victim and her family." The Dedicated Rape Unit can be contacted on 101.
