SCOTTISH MAN SENTENCED FOR STARVING AND EUTHANISING HIS DOG BOSS
A Scottish man, Ciaran Connelly, was sentenced at Glasgow Sheriff Court on January 15 for animal welfare breach after pleading guilty. He was found guilty of neglecting his two-year-old American Bulldog, Boss, who was in a severe state of emaciation, so weak he could barely stand.
Connelly had inadequately fed the dog for most likely over two months, leading to significant unnecessary suffering.
A Scottish SPCA inspector described Boss’s condition as "the worst case of emaciation" they had witnessed in ten years, noting the dog was skeletal, unable to walk, and had no visible body fat or muscles.
After veterinary examination, Boss was taken to the Scottish SPCA’s rescue center but was humanely euthanised due to his severe deterioration.
The case haunted the inspectors, who emphasized that the neglect caused Boss immense physical and mental suffering.
Connelly faced a one-year ban from owning dogs and was ordered to perform 150 hours of unpaid community work.
The Scottish SPCA has expressed disappointment with the weak penalty, advocating for stricter measures such as a National Animal Offenders Register to prevent future abuses.
