CHRISTOPHER TILEY, 67, JAILED IN MELKSHAM FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE OF YOUNG GIRL
In July 2014, Christopher Tiley, a 67-year-old resident of Melksham, was sentenced to ten years and nine months in prison after being convicted of multiple sexual offenses against a young girl. Tiley had groomed and sexually abused the girl over a period of two years, starting when she was just 11 years old. The trial at Swindon Crown Court revealed that the only thing preventing him from raping her when she was around 13 was his own impotence.Tiley, who denied all charges, was found guilty of two attempted rapes and nine sexual assaults. The court also heard that one of the sexual assaults was committed against her older sister a few years prior to his targeting of the younger girl.
Robin Shellard, defending Tiley, stated that his client was not in good health, having suffered a heart attack, strokes, and sleep apnoea. Mr. Shellard noted, "Tiley knew he was facing a lengthy jail term," and added that due to his age, the incarceration would be especially difficult for him.
Judge Tim Mousley QC sentenced Tiley, commenting, "This was a course of conduct culminating in at least two attempts at sexual intercourse. She puts the total number of assaults at about five, and she was just 13. Your intent was, of course, to rape her. Your intention was only thwarted by your impotence."
The judge continued, "I take the view that you groomed her and then exploited her vulnerability. Although you pleaded not guilty, which does not increase your sentence, it meant you had to relive your experiences while giving evidence."
He also acknowledged Tiley's good character and poor health, stating, "You are 67 and a man of good character. People speak highly of you. I take your health into account. The attempted rape was just a step away from a full offence."
As a result of his conviction, Tiley is required to register as a sex offender for life.
The jury, composed of five men and seven women, heard that Tiley tried to force himself on the younger girl after two years of sexual abuse. She, now an adult, began to be abused in early 2012 when she was living in Devizes.
The allegations began in 2008 when he attempted to kiss an older sister with his tongue as they said goodbye; though she told her mother, it was dismissed as an accident. The abuse of the younger girl started when she was 11, with repeated groping and eventually an attempt to have sex with her.
The girl confided in Childline and told her school friends about the abuse before reporting it to her family in January of the previous year. When questioned by police, Tiley denied all allegations, claiming they never happened.
