MAN GETS FOUR YEARS FOR RAPE OF PROSTITUTE
AN EVIL rapist who described sex workers as being "on the lowest rung of the ladder" was today jailed for four years. At the High Court in Glasgow Christopher Savill, 42, was found guilty of forcing a 26-year-old prostitute to strip and then raping her.
Savill's home is just six or seven miles from the wood near Roberton, South Lanarkshire, where 27-year-old street girl Emma Caldwell's body was found.
Emma, from Erskine, whose murder is still unsolved, was last seen leaving a hostel in Inglefield Street, Govanhill, Glasgow, on May 7, 2005.
Her body was found the next day by a dog walker.
During his trial, Savill, of 5 Main Street, Crawfordjohn, Biggar, admitted he drove to Glasgow twice a week to visit prostitutes.
The 26-year-old victim he was found guilty of raping in Woodlands Terrace Lane, Glasgow, on February 19 last year, lived in the same hostel as Emma.
In evidence, the 26-year-old prostitute told of her terror when Savill, picked her up in his car.
She said Savill told her: "If you want to see the streets again, do as I say." Giving evidence for his defense, Savill admitted using prostitutes twice a week and driving from his home in South Lanarkshire to Glasgow.
He claimed the woman had consented to sex and during cross-examination, he described prostitutes as being on the lowest rung of the ladder.
Yesterday, defense counsel Mr.
Thomas Ross revealed Savill is continuing to deny raping the woman.
Mr.
Ross stressed no violence was used against her and she was left uninjured afterward.
In addition to the four-year jail sentence, the judge, Lord Carloway, placed Savill on the sex offenders' register.
