CHRISTOPHER RUDSDALE'S BRUTAL ATTACK ON BABY IN GATESHEAD LEADS TO JAIL SENTENCE

In April 2018, a disturbing case of child abuse emerged from Gateshead, revealing the shocking extent of violence inflicted upon a vulnerable infant.

A young baby, only a few weeks old, was subjected to a brutal assault that left him with severe injuries, resembling the aftermath of a fight.

The perpetrator, Christopher Rudsdale, a chef employed at a local pub, was responsible for this heinous act that would have lasting repercussions for the child and his family.

According to court proceedings, Rudsdale headbutted the infant and possibly delivered a punch to his face during a brief 15-minute period of care.

The injuries sustained by the baby were extensive, with nine separate sites of trauma documented by medical professionals.

These injuries included bleeding on the brain, bruising, swelling, and other signs of physical assault.

The injuries were so severe that they prompted immediate medical intervention, with the baby being taken to the accident and emergency department of the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle via ambulance.

The medical examination revealed a range of injuries: a bruise on the right eyebrow, discoloration inside the nostrils, swelling and a purple hue around the eye, swelling to the bridge of the nose, blue bruising under the left eye, pinpoint bruising inside the lip, white skin on the floor of the mouth, and dried blood in the nostril.

An MRI scan further confirmed the presence of blood on both sides of the baby’s brain, although this condition later resolved.

The severity of the injuries led doctors to conclude that the child had been punched hard in the face and possibly shaken, with one medical professional describing the baby’s appearance as if he had been in a fight.

Initially, Rudsdale denied the severity of his actions, claiming that he and the baby had merely clashed heads.

However, the mother of the child noticed the injuries and took her son to see a doctor.

Her concerns prompted further investigation, and the baby was subsequently admitted to hospital for thorough examination.

The court heard that Rudsdale, who worked at The Falcon pub as a chef, was only left alone with the infant briefly during the attack.

His account was contradicted by the medical findings and the injuries observed.

Adding to the distress, the mother of the child faced unwarranted suspicion.

She expressed her anguish in a victim impact statement, describing the trauma of being accused of harming her own son.

She recounted how she was forced to supervise every moment with her child in hospital and was unable to hold or comfort him without strangers watching her, making her feel like a criminal.

The situation worsened when she was told her son could leave the hospital on Christmas Day but could not return home, instead being placed in foster care.

Her words conveyed the profound emotional toll this ordeal had taken on her, describing the experience as akin to torture.

During the court hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, prosecutor Deborah Smithies detailed the injuries and the medical opinions, emphasizing that the injuries were inconsistent with a single blow.

Judge Simon Batiste, addressing Rudsdale, a 35-year-old resident of Parons Drive, Ryton, Gateshead, condemned his actions.

The judge stated, “Babies are the most vulnerable in our society and need to be protected.

In this case, he needed protecting from you.

He was two months of age and was therefore incredibly vulnerable.

The suggestion made is (the baby) had the appearance he had been in a fight.

He had bruising and swelling to the nose which suggested he had been punched hard in the face and may have been shaken as well.

You suggested in the pre-sentence report there was a single headbutt.

I make it clear, I do not accept there was a single event that caused the injuries.

There was more than one blow that caused these injuries.

As a result of your behaviour and refusal to accept responsibility, the child’s mother had her child taken away from her as well.

That must have had an appalling impact on her.” Rudsdale, who has no prior convictions, pleaded guilty to child cruelty charges.

His remorse was reflected in his sentencing, and he was sentenced to 17 months in prison.

The case highlights the devastating consequences of child abuse and the importance of safeguarding the most vulnerable members of society, especially in cases where trust is betrayed by those responsible for their care.
