BRIDLINGTON TEACHER CHRISTOPHER REEN SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH 15-YEAR-OLD STUDENT AT HEADLANDS SCHOOL

In a disturbing case that has once again cast a shadow over the reputation of Headlands School and Community Science College in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, a teacher named Christopher Reen has been found guilty of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old pupil. The incident marks the fifth conviction of a staff member at the school related to inappropriate relationships with students, highlighting a troubling pattern of misconduct within the institution.

Reen, aged 31 and recently married at the time, was brought into the school to fill a vacancy left by another staff member who had previously appeared in court for an illicit affair. Despite being warned by the headteacher to maintain appropriate boundaries with students, Reen’s actions betrayed that trust within a matter of weeks after his arrival. It was during this short period that he began a clandestine and inappropriate relationship with a 15-year-old girl, a student at the school.

The misconduct came to light after Reen bombarded the girl with numerous text messages and phone calls, some of which included explicit images of his genitals. The girl, who was only 15 at the time, recounted that Reen even spent nights at his home while his wife, who was pregnant with their first child, was away. The relationship was characterized by repeated sexual encounters, with the girl revealing that they had sex seven or eight times, often meeting at his home or at the martial arts club he ran outside school hours.

Prosecutor Helen Hendry detailed the extent of Reen’s inappropriate conduct, noting that he sent the girl over 800 text messages, including some during lessons, and used a ruse involving the martial arts club to initiate contact. The girl attended the club, which Reen managed, and it was there that their relationship deepened. She described their first kiss occurring when they were alone at the club, and from there, a full sexual relationship developed over a period of four months.

Rumors of the affair eventually surfaced, prompting teachers and staff to alert the girl’s mother. The authorities were contacted, leading to police investigations. Reen initially claimed that he believed the girl was 16, asserting that she had deceived him about her age. However, the girl insisted that Reen knew she was only 15 and that he had promised to run away with her. She also revealed that she lied to her mother about her whereabouts, claiming she was meeting friends when she was actually meeting Reen.

During the trial at Grimsby Crown Court, Judge David Tremberg sentenced Reen to three years and four months in prison. The judge emphasized the importance of deterring such behavior among teachers, stating, “It is important the court sends out a message to teachers who may be inclined to act as you did – you will get locked up for years.”

Reen’s actions have led to him being placed under an indefinite Sexual Offenders Prevention Order, which imposes strict restrictions on his contact with girls under 16. This case is part of a broader pattern of misconduct at Headlands School, where three other male teachers—Art teacher Ian Blott, science teacher Steven Edwards, and IT teacher Terry Mann—have previously been convicted of sexual offenses involving students. Additionally, a 26-year-old female class supervisor received a conditional discharge in 2008 after admitting to abusing her position of trust by kissing a 16-year-old boy.

Reen’s case underscores ongoing concerns about safeguarding within educational institutions and the importance of vigilance to protect vulnerable students from exploitation and abuse.
