PAIGNTON MAN CHRISTOPHER PERRY CAUGHT IN ONLINE GROOMING PLOT AT GATWICK AIRPORT EN ROUTE TO PHILADELPHIA SUMMER CAMP
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilant law enforcement, Christopher Perry, a resident of Paignton, was apprehended by police officers after attempting to travel to the United States for a summer camp in Philadelphia.The arrest took place at Gatwick Airport in June of the previous year, following an extensive undercover operation aimed at preventing potential harm to children.
Police had set up a sting operation involving decoys posing as young girls, specifically two fictitious profiles named Rosie and Morgan.
These profiles were created by adult officers from the West Midlands Regional Organised Crime Unit and the North West Regional Crime Unit, respectively.
The decoys were designed to simulate the online presence of children aged 11 and 12, with the intent of catching individuals seeking to exploit minors.
Christopher Perry, aged 30, who resides on Lancaster Drive in Paignton, was identified as a suspect after engaging in a series of conversations with these decoys over a period of seven weeks in early 2019.
During these interactions, Perry initially believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old girl named Rosie, but she later revealed her true age as 11.
Perry quickly shifted the tone of their conversations to sexual topics, encouraging the decoy to touch herself and fantasizing about engaging in sexual activities, including intercourse.
He also contacted another decoy, Morgan, who claimed to be 12 years old, and continued to exchange explicit messages and even sent a photograph of himself massaging his groin.
Authorities became increasingly concerned when Perry expressed his intention to travel to the United States to work at a summer camp in Philadelphia, where he planned to have contact with children.
Recognizing the potential danger, police moved swiftly to arrest him at Gatwick Airport before he could carry out his plans.
Perry was taken into custody and subsequently appeared before Exeter Crown Court to face charges.
At the court hearing, Perry admitted to two counts of attempting to incite a child to sexual activity and two counts of attempted sexual communication with a child.
His actions were described as motivated by personal sexual gratification, with graphic details of his conversations and fantasies revealed during the proceedings.
The court was told that Perry had a longstanding interest in early teenage girls and was seeking help for his behavior.
Judge Peter Johnson sentenced Perry to two years and eight months in prison.
Additionally, Perry was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his online activities.
He was also subjected to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which grants authorities the authority to oversee and restrict his future online interactions to prevent any further harm.
In a related case, Louise Woolston was sentenced to three years after admitting to possessing Class A drugs with intent to supply.
