MAN WHO SHOT HIS WIFE AND TRIED TO KILL HIMSELF FACES LIFE IN PRISON
A 50-year-old man from Cwmbran, Christopher Parry, was convicted of murdering his wife, Caroline Parry, at close range near her residence in Newport last August. The court described him as a controlling and dominant individual.
Parry shot his wife twice in the back after she had left him, then attempted to take his own life by shooting himself, sustaining severe head and facial injuries.
Court proceedings revealed that the shooting was a calculated act driven by his unwillingness to accept her leaving the relationship.
At Newport Crown Court, he was found guilty of murder on a Wednesday, and on the following Friday, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 26 years.
The trial uncovered that Parry, who held a shotgun license and kept three firearms at his home, had suffered from mental health problems and depression for more than ten years.
The judge, during sentencing, stated that when Parry left his home, he had a clear intention to kill his wife, evidenced by the fact that he loaded his gun with three cartridges, indicating forethought.
The incident took place in a tranquil residential area and caused considerable concern among local residents.
Parry claimed his only aim was to shoot himself, but prosecutors argued that he had deliberately planned the murder of his wife, a claim he denied.
The shooting happened after his wife left her new partner, with Parry waiting in Seabreeze Avenue and retrieving a semi-automatic shotgun from his car for the attack.
His mental health history and depression were factors considered by the court, and he was later sectioned under the Mental Health Act after hospitalization.
The case underscores the tragic consequences of his actions, which took his wife’s life, left their children without a mother, and profoundly impacted his own life.
