CHRISTOPHER MURPHY'S REPEATED OFFENSES IN PAISLEY AND RENFREWSHIRE SHOCK COMMUNITY
In August 2019, Christopher Murphy, a man with a troubling history of sexual offenses against minors, was involved in a disturbing incident outside a Subway restaurant in Paisley. The incident, which took place in broad daylight, saw Murphy approach an 11-year-old girl and her friend as they exited the eatery on Glasgow Road.
Murphy, who was prowling nearby while the girls were inside, approached them without any greeting or conversation.
Instead, he simply looked them up and down, displaying predatory behavior that caused significant distress to the young victims.
According to court reports, Murphy then committed a sexual assault by placing his right hand on the groin area of one of the girls, with his thumb at her zipper.
He proceeded to clasp his hand around her private parts and squeezed, an act that left the girl deeply upset and shaken.
Witnesses nearby observed Murphy walking away briskly after the assault, leaving the girl visibly distressed.
One of the witnesses, a passenger in a nearby vehicle, noticed her upset state and flagged down police officers who happened to be in the vicinity.
The police responded swiftly, speaking to the young girl, who was visibly upset and trembling.
They managed to identify Murphy from CCTV footage and traced him back to his residence.
The victim was taken for a police interview, while her friend was allowed to go home.
Murphy’s actions prompted immediate concern, given his history of sexual offenses and the strict legal restrictions placed upon him.
Murphy, who appeared in Paisley's sheriff court to face charges related to this incident, admitted to breaching his Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) by approaching children under 16 and sexually assaulting the girl.
Prosecutor Claire Rowan detailed the attack, stating that it occurred around 3 pm on July 17 in Clarence Street, shortly after the girls had been inside the Subway shop.
The court was told that Murphy was seen pacing outside the shop, carrying a carrier bag, and walking back and forth in front of the window.
When the girls left the store and turned onto Clarence Street, Murphy approached them, coming within touching distance.
Without engaging in conversation, he looked them up and down before committing the assault.
During the hearing, Sheriff Seith Ireland was informed that Murphy was deeply ashamed of his conduct and could offer no reasonable explanation for his behavior.
The court was also told that Murphy had a long history of offending against young girls, including previous convictions for stalking and assault.
His past offenses include stalking a 14-year-old girl in 2009, which resulted in a probation sentence, and an assault on a nine-year-old girl in 2012, where he pinned her against a wall and placed his hands between her legs.
In this latest case, Murphy was sentenced to 220 days in jail, a reduction from an initial 330 days due to his guilty plea.
The sentence was backdated to the date of his remand last month.
Additionally, Murphy was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years, reflecting the seriousness of his repeated violations and the ongoing threat he poses to the community.
Murphy’s criminal history underscores a pattern of predatory behavior, with previous convictions spanning over a decade.
His earlier offenses include a 16-month jail sentence handed down in June 2012 after he attacked a schoolgirl in Greenlaw Avenue, Paisley, in front of her mother.
During that incident, Murphy pinned the girl against a wall and touched her private parts, prompting her mother to intervene and attempt to detain him until police arrived.
Murphy managed to escape, but police found personal items in his jacket pockets that linked him to the assault.
He admitted to the offense, and the court sentenced him to a 16-month jail term, with a three-year extended sentence to ensure close monitoring upon his release.
Murphy’s history of offending reveals a disturbing pattern of targeting young girls in public spaces, often in broad daylight.
His repeated breaches of legal restrictions and his failure to reform have led to his current incarceration, but concerns remain about his potential for future offenses.
The community and legal authorities continue to grapple with the challenge of managing individuals like Murphy, whose actions have caused significant trauma and fear among victims and their families.
