HARTLEPOOL MAN GUILTY OF HISTORIC CHILD SEXUAL ASSAULT
A Hartlepool man indecently assaulted a child more than 20 years ago.
Christopher McGibbon denied forcing the youngster into a sex act.
However, he was found guilty by a jury after a trial on October 12.
He appeared in court on Friday for sentencing, with the court hearing he has no previous police record.
McGibbon's barrister described him as "responsible, trustworthy and reliable" based on character references.
The judge, Paul Watson, noted that McGibbon had led a "law-abiding and constructive life" until this crime was brought to light.
A probation report expressed concerns about his ability to cope with prison due to longstanding mental health issues.
McGibbon, of Fletcher Walk, Rifthouse in Hartlepool, was sentenced to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years.
He is required to attend 30 rehabilitation days with the probation service and perform 150 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, a mental health treatment order was imposed.
