BURY MAN SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE AND STRANGULATION
A man from Bury named Christopher Cullen, aged 36, has been convicted of serious crimes related to domestic abuse. He repeatedly harmed his pregnant partner physically and emotionally, including instances of strangulation and fracturing her jaw.
Cullen also engaged in degrading behaviors such as name-calling, restricting her from seeing family and friends, conducting invasive checks on her mobile phone, controlling her financial resources, and limiting her clothing choices.
On February 24, Cullen was sentenced to more than two years in prison, and a Domestic Abuse Protection Order (DAPO) was imposed on him.
The order prevents him from contacting his victim directly or indirectly and requires him to maintain a distance of 700 meters from her home.
This initiative is part of a pilot scheme by the Home Office and Greater Manchester Police to better protect domestic abuse victims.
DAPOs are issued for different periods and may include stipulations like electronic monitoring or mandates to attend behavior change programs.
Breaching a DAPO is now classified as a criminal offence.
Assistant Chief Constable Steph Parker noted that these orders greatly enhance victim safety, adding that any breach can lead to arrest.
The purpose of the scheme is to empower victims by providing them with safety assurances and protective measures.
