SHIPLEY MAN CHRISTOPHER CONELL ADMITS SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP WITH 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN LEEDS COURT
In a case that has drawn significant attention, Christopher Conell, a 27-year-old man from Shipley, has admitted to engaging in sexual activities with a teenage girl aged just 15. The incident came to light during proceedings at Leeds Crown Court, revealing a troubling relationship that developed over a period of several weeks.According to prosecutor Philip Adams, Conell, who resides on Shipley Fields Road in Shipley, confided in the young girl about his marital problems, which led to a close friendship. Over time, this friendship escalated into a sexual relationship, with Conell having full sexual encounters with the girl on three or four separate occasions. The sexual involvement lasted approximately three to four weeks, during which the girl was reportedly a willing participant.
The relationship was ultimately uncovered when the girl’s mother discovered an incriminating text message on her mobile phone, raising suspicions and prompting further investigation. Despite the serious nature of the case, the girl did not file a formal complaint nor did she provide a police statement, which complicated the legal proceedings.
During the court hearing, Neil Clark, representing Conell, emphasized that his client had not attempted to evade responsibility. Clark explained that the offenses took place during a turbulent period in Conell’s life, marked by marital difficulties and the serious illness of his father. He also noted that the girl was willing to participate in the relationship, which was a point of contention in the case.
Judge Recorder Martin Bethel, QC, acknowledged Conell’s immediate admission of guilt, stating that the defendant had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity. The judge remarked that Conell’s risk of reoffending was extremely low, but emphasized that the shame and consequences of his actions had already caused significant damage to his reputation and those close to him.
As part of his sentence, Conell was given a community order for three years, which includes participation in a sex offenders’ rehabilitation program. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years, underscoring the seriousness with which the court viewed his actions and the importance of ongoing monitoring.
