CHRIS WILLIAMS FROM OXFORDSHIRE AND STENSON FIELDS JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT IN DERBYSHIRE

In August 2019, a disturbing incident unfolded in Derby involving a man named Chris Williams, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a young mother in the area of Stenson Fields. The victim, a 29-year-old woman, was walking with her young child when Williams, who was passing by repeatedly, targeted her in a series of unsettling encounters.

According to court reports, Williams, aged 23 at the time, approached the woman multiple times as she strolled through Stenson Fields. On the final occasion, he seized the opportunity to grab her behind before fleeing the scene. The assault left a lasting impact on the victim, who expressed feelings of distress and concern about her ability to care for her child independently in the aftermath of the incident.

Williams appeared before Southern Derbyshire Magistrates Court to face charges related to this sexual assault. During the hearing, he pleaded guilty to the offence on July 30. District Judge Jonathan Taaffe sentenced him to 16 weeks in prison, acknowledging his guilty plea and noting that Williams had no prior criminal record. However, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the offence, describing it as a case of sexual assault that targeted the victim deliberately. He also highlighted the psychological harm inflicted upon her.

In court, Williams attempted to justify his actions, claiming that he was lost and panicked while out for a walk before heading to work. He explained to Judge Taaffe, “I went to have a walk before I went to work. When I was walking I got lost because I don’t know the whole area. And in that moment I just panicked and got agitated.”

The judge responded critically, questioning Williams’ reasoning: “That panic appears to be grabbing hold of this lady’s buttock. If you were lost and panicking, why didn’t you ask this lady for help?” Williams admitted to saying “excuse me” but then ran away, claiming he was overwhelmed by stress and fear.

The court also learned that following his conviction, Williams was suspended from his employment. In addition to his prison sentence, he will be required to register as a sex offender for the next seven years and pay a victim surcharge of £122.

The incident reportedly took place on July 11. During the initial court proceedings, prosecutor Peter Bettany described the events: “A 29-year-old woman was walking with her small child when the defendant repeatedly passed her. Eventually, he passed from behind, grasped her bottom, and ran off. Because he was wearing distinctive clothing, a fluorescent jacket, he was quickly identified and apprehended.”

Williams admitted to the offence during police interviews, stating that he was bored and decided to take a walk before work, but he did not understand what had come over him. The victim, in a heartfelt victim impact statement, shared her emotional struggles, saying, “I would like to say that I am quite a strong person but this has knocked me. I feel like I won’t be able to take my child to school on my own after this.”

It was also revealed that Williams previously resided in Stenson Fields but has since moved to an address in Oxfordshire, where he currently lives.
