THIRTEEN CONVICTED OVER DEVON CARE HOME ABUSE – VIELSTONE CARE HOME NEAR BIDEFORD AND SISTER HOME GATOOMA NEAR HOLSWORTHY, DEVON
Residents were held in punishment rooms at Vielstone care home.
The court heard Jolyon Marshall “corrupted” other staff members and was jailed for 28 months.
Thirteen people, including staff members and Marshall’s wife, were convicted after a series of trials at Bristol Crown Court.
The incidents involved creating a culture of systematic abuse where residents were imprisoned in rooms like the 'garden room' or 'quiet room' for hours, often overnight, during 2010 and 2011, with some spending 195 sessions in these rooms.
The court described the treatment as “barbaric, disgusting and unnecessary,” and highlighted the systemic and organised nature of the abuse.
The sentences ranged from conditional discharges to several months’ imprisonment, with some sentences suspended.
Jolyon Marshall was identified as the key offender involved in abuse and false imprisonment related to the care homes in Devon.
