OFFENDER GRAHAM COX SENTENCED TO 18 YEARS FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE OF ELDERLY WOMAN IN LISKEARD
Graham Cox, aged 59 and of no fixed abode, forcibly entered the home of an 89-year-old woman in Liskeard and attempted to rape her.
He told police he preferred being in prison because he received warm food, a TV, and shelter, stating he saw prison as a better environment than living in his tent.
Cox pleaded guilty to attempted rape, assault by penetration, threats to kill, and failing to comply with sex offender notification requirements.
He was convicted and sentenced to an 18-year extended sentence, which included 12 years in custody and six years on license.
The court heard that Cox had been released from prison on September 19, 2021, after serving a 39-month sentence for a previous sex attack on a friend.
His latest crimes were committed shortly after his release, driven by his desire to return to prison to escape his homelessness and hardship.
The judge described Cox's actions as 'truly disturbing' and highlighted that he had bought duct tape to subdue the elderly victim, knowing her poor health, and attempted to rape her, only failing because he could not get an erection.
The victim showed extraordinary bravery in escaping and alerting neighbors, who witnessed Cox trying to escape and took photographs of him.
Cox was also noted to present a significant risk to women and must register as a sex offender for life.
