CHARLES KNOWLES BURY RAPIST SENTENCED FOR SERIES OF ATTACKS ON TEENAGE GIRLS IN BURY
In a case that has shocked the community of Bury, Charles Knowles, aged 60, of Back Broad Street, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being found guilty of multiple sexual offenses involving teenage girls.The incidents spanned over four years, from July 2005 to August 2009, and involved two young women, one of whom was just 15 years old at the time of her assault.
During the proceedings at Bolton Crown Court, it was revealed that Knowles had committed a series of heinous acts, including rapes and sexual assaults, against these vulnerable victims.
One of the victims, who cannot be publicly identified due to legal restrictions, was only 15 when she was first attacked by Knowles.
The court heard that the disturbing nature of these crimes only came to light after the second victim, who had been drinking and was asleep when the assault occurred, discovered a recording made by her attacker that captured part of the incident.
Knowles had initially denied all allegations, maintaining his innocence throughout the trial.
However, after a jury deliberated, he was convicted on ten counts of rape, one charge of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault.
The evidence presented in court painted a disturbing picture of a man who preyed on young women, including one with cerebral palsy, exploiting their vulnerability for his own gratification.
Represented by Tina Landale, who argued that Knowles still maintains his innocence, the defendant faced a severe sentence.
Judge Timothy Clayson, presiding over the case, sentenced Knowles to an indeterminate term for public protection.
The judge emphasized the seriousness of the crimes and the lack of remorse or insight shown by the offender.
Knowles will be eligible to apply for parole after serving a minimum of eight and a half years.
Additionally, he will be registered on the sex offenders’ register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
In his sentencing remarks, Judge Clayson made it clear that Knowles demonstrated no understanding or acknowledgment of the harm caused.
"You have no insight whatsoever into your offending behaviour," the judge stated, underscoring the gravity of the case and the need for continued public protection from such offenders.
