A man named Carl Anderson has been sentenced to life in prison after accepting responsibility for the murder of Michelle Grey, his former partner.
Ms Grey, aged 42, was found deceased by strangulation at her home in Hillfield Street, Gateshead, on 19 December 2014.
Anderson, aged 41 and a resident of Hillfield Street as well, pleaded guilty during a previous court hearing.
The judge, John Milford, sentenced him to serve at least 12 and a half years, citing that Anderson had committed the killing following an argument and a violent struggle.
He initially fled the scene but was later detained in Leeds after police tracked him down.
Northumbria Police’s Detective Chief Inspector John Bent described the murder as savage and calculating, highlighting Anderson’s lack of remorse and his efforts to avoid capture.
He said, 'This was a brutal, cold-blooded homicide of his ex-partner, which had a profound effect on her family.
Anderson showed no remorse and ran away to dodge arrest.
The life sentence reflects the seriousness of his crime and provides some justice for Michelle’s loved ones.'
