NEWCASTLE CHILD RAPIST BRIAN JORDAN TOOK HIS OWN LIFE IN PRISON AFTER FEARING HE'D BE ATTACKED BY OTHER INMATES
A Newcastle child rapist Brian Jordan was found hanged in his cell at HMP Durham after fearing he would be attacked by other inmates finding out about his horrific crimes.Only seven days before his death, the 60-year-old had been locked up for seven years and seven months after jurors found him guilty of raping and indecently assaulting one girl and having unlawful sexual intercourse with another.
Jordan was said to have become "distressed" and "scared" he would be attacked by other prisoners after he found out his conviction had been reported in the press.
Following his suicide on July 3 last year, an independent investigation was launched by the Prisons and Probations Ombudsman (PPO).
The report concluded that staff at the prison could not have foreseen Jordan's actions.
He had been remanded in custody in June last year charged with sexual offences and was sent to HMP Durham.
Despite initially no thoughts of suicide or self-harm, later his distress was evident, especially after reading about his crimes online.
The PPO report stated that Jordan died from pressure to the neck caused by hanging, and he had used cannabis at some point, although unlikely at the time of death.
The clinical reviewer concluded that the emergency response was appropriate, and a jury inquest determined that Jordan died by suicide.
