BERTRAM AND ALAN HUGHES FROM CLITHEROE AND SALTERFORTH SENTENCED FOR SEX OFFENSES

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Clitheroe, Salterforth, and surrounding areas, two brothers have been handed lengthy prison sentences after being found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against young girls. The convictions stem from a detailed and extensive trial held at Preston Crown Court, where the severity and brutality of their actions were laid bare for the court and the public to see.

Alan Hughes, aged 45, of Eaves Hall Lane in West Bradford near Clitheroe, was convicted of a total of 22 criminal charges. These included four counts of rape, 16 counts of indecency with a child, and two counts of assault by beating. The court heard that Alan’s abusive behavior was not only violent but also calculated, involving the use of alcohol to manipulate and attack his victims. During the proceedings, prosecutor Jeremy Lasker described the acts as “the most dreadful behaviour,” emphasizing the gravity of the crimes committed in locations such as Earby and Wales.

Alan Hughes’s brother, Bertram Hughes, formerly residing on Barnoldswick New Road in Salterforth but now living in Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey, was also convicted of a serious offense. He was found guilty of a single charge of indecent assault but was acquitted of three other similar charges. Bertram was sentenced to seven years in prison and was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely, a decision made by Judge Michael Byrne. The judge expressed concern about the potential ongoing risk Bertram might pose to young girls and women, indicating that his behavior could have long-lasting implications.

During the trial, both brothers maintained their innocence, claiming that their accusers were fabricating stories. However, after a thorough and lengthy legal process, the jury found them guilty of the charges against them. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which the justice system treats such offenses, especially those involving vulnerable minors.

Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Dave Groombridge of Pendle CID commented on the case, stating, “Clearly this is a very significant sentence and I think it reflects the seriousness of this case. Hopefully, this will send out a message to everyone that the police and judiciary will deal with these kinds of incidents robustly and impose appropriate sentences. The sentence accurately reflects the abhorrence that the public has towards offending of this kind of crime.” The case has left a lasting impact on the communities involved, highlighting the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting children from abuse.
