MAN WHO THREATENED PARTNER WITH A METAL BAR JAILED

Benjamin Bird was sentenced to prison at Newport Crown Court after confessing to multiple violent crimes committed against his former partner, whom he had been with for eight months.

The first assault occurred in April 2024, triggered by a disagreement over the victim speaking to an unknown man at a pub earlier that day.

During this altercation, Bird strangled the victim for approximately 10 seconds.

A second incident unfolded three months later when Bird, while riding in a taxi after a night out, accused the victim of infidelity.

He then punched her in the face and spat at her.

When she asked him to leave the taxi, Bird threatened to harm her dog, prompting her to run home.

By the time she arrived, Bird was already there, and he struck her again, causing her to lose consciousness.

In October 2024, Bird went to the victim’s address to retrieve clothing and confronted her by rushing at her with a metal bar.

Bird admitted charges of intentional strangulation, intentional suffocation, threatening someone with an offensive weapon—a metal bar—in a private location, and committing assault causing actual bodily harm.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to abide by a 10-year restraining order.
