BEN REDSELL FROM COLCHESTER SPARED JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULT AND CHILD PORN OFFENSES
In August 2008, a serious case involving Ben Redsell, a former deputy mayor from the town of Woodbridge and a member of the Suffolk Police Authority, drew significant public attention. Redsell, aged 29 at the time, was found to have committed multiple offenses, including the sexual assault of a teenage girl and possession of indecent images of children. The incident occurred after Redsell had been out in Colchester, Essex, where he assaulted a 19-year-old woman at her residence. The assault took place following a night out, and the details of the incident were brought to light during the court proceedings. The victim's account and evidence presented in court confirmed the assault, which was a serious breach of trust and personal safety.
In addition to the assault, police investigations uncovered a disturbing collection of child pornography stored at Redsell’s home in Melton, Suffolk. The images, which dated back to the year 2000, depicted minors in explicit and indecent situations. The discovery of these images added a grave dimension to Redsell’s criminal record, highlighting a pattern of disturbing behavior.
Following his arrest and subsequent charges, Redsell resigned from his position as deputy mayor of Woodbridge and from his role within the Suffolk Police Authority. The court proceedings culminated in a sentencing that reflected the severity of his crimes. Redsell was handed a three-year community order, a sentence that requires him to adhere to strict conditions and supervision. Additionally, he was placed on the sex offenders’ register and is now legally prohibited from working with children, aiming to prevent any further risk to minors.
During the sentencing, Claude Knights, representing the charity Kidscape, expressed his opinion on the case, stating that Redsell did not receive the punishment he truly deserved. The case remains a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and the ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation and abuse.
