CANNOCK MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL RAPE AFTER AMBUSH
A father-of-two, Barry Perry, who waited in ambush for a woman to commit a rape, was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for a night-time assault on a 17-year-old girl. The judge described the attack as "chillingly planned and executed." Prosecutor Mr.
Michael Elsom stated that Perry struck the girl’s 17-year-old boyfriend with a heavy stone during their walk through Cannock, before forcibly raping the girl in an alleyway after forcing her to strip.
Perry, aged 23, of Bowes Drive, Chadsmoor, pleaded guilty to charges of rape and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in February of the previous year.
Judge John Shand commented, "This was a chillingly planned and executed rape while you were waiting to encounter some unfortunate woman by herself.
When that did not happen, you followed this young couple.
You attacked the young man with a substantial stone.
When you got rid of him, you dragged that young woman into a secluded alleyway and committed a brutal, terrifying, and humiliating rape on her, a complete stranger." Perry was told to serve a minimum of eight years and upon release, he would be on licence for life and required to register under the Sex Offenders Act.
The defendant’s history includes previous convictions for violence, notably an attack on a girl outside a school in Cannock in 1993.
He had also planned to go to a nightclub to pick up a woman but fell off his bike into a stream, which prevented him from entering the club because of his condition.
The victim showed bravery by telling her boyfriend to run away; Perry caught her, dragged her into an alleyway, and assaulted her.
After the attack, he went to his girlfriend's house, had sex, and left the following morning.
The victim was able to escape and was subsequently taken to a police station.
Perry was identified as waiting for an unlucky woman to attack, and his plan involved attacking the young man first to incapacitate him before assaulting the girl.
This case underscores a brutal and premeditated sexual assault with severe legal consequences.
