BARRY GRAHAM FROM BURY SENTENCED FOR CHILD MOLESTATION IN MINSHULL STREET COURT
In September 2020, a heartbreaking case unfolded in Bury involving a family’s trust shattered by a heinous act committed by a familiar face.A mother from Bury, whose identity remains private to protect her young daughter, has publicly shared her profound anguish following the conviction and sentencing of Barry Graham, a 74-year-old man, for the sexual abuse of her then-five-year-old child.
Barry Graham, a resident of Colleen Crescent in Bury, was brought before Minshull Street Crown Court where he faced charges related to encouraging a young girl to engage in sexual activity.
The court proceedings revealed that Graham, a father of nine and a grandfather, exploited his position of trust by involving the child in inappropriate conduct under the guise of a simple school pickup.
The mother recounted that she had asked Graham to collect her daughter from school, unaware of his sinister intentions.
It was during this interaction that Graham allegedly used the opportunity to engage the child in indecent behaviour, an act that would later lead to his arrest and conviction.
Following a trial held in August, Graham was found guilty of encouraging a child to partake in sexual activity.
However, he was acquitted of a second similar offence.
The court, upon sentencing, imposed a four-year prison term on Graham, along with a sexual harm prevention order designed to restrict his contact with minors, particularly the victim and her family.
Additionally, a restraining order was issued, ensuring that Graham would have no contact with the girl or her relatives once he is released from incarceration.
The victim’s mother expressed her pain and sense of betrayal, stating, “I’ve known him for many years.
He was a family friend who we trusted.
I think he’s a monster.” She further explained that Graham had made the abuse a secret, instructing her daughter not to tell anyone.
It was only through a casual remark made by her daughter while she was changing that suspicions arose.
This led the mother to immediately contact the police, prompting a swift investigation.
Specially-trained officers interviewed the young girl, who was able to provide a detailed account of the abuse, which reportedly took place in the bathroom of their home on Colleen Crescent.
Graham was subsequently arrested and charged based on the evidence provided by the child.
Despite his denial of the allegations, the court relied heavily on the testimony of the young victim.
Throughout this ordeal, the victim’s family has strived to support her through the trauma, but their efforts have been hampered by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the lengthy court process.
The mother lamented, “She still can’t even have counselling because of coronavirus and she couldn’t have any help before then because of the trial.
It’s been awful for the past few years but now we have finally been given some closure with what has happened in court.” Her primary concern now is the potential that Graham may have harmed other children.
She expressed her hope that her daughter’s experience will serve as a warning to others and emphasized the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable children from predators like Graham.
