BRISTOL POLICE EX-OFFICER BARRY GEERING SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCE

A former police officer from Bristol has been handed a sentence of 28 weeks in prison, which has been suspended for a period of 18 months, after admitting to committing a child sex offence. The individual involved, Barry Geering, aged 44 and originally from Ealing, London, was taken into custody in April 2024 following a thorough investigation conducted by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU).

Upon his arrest, Geering was immediately suspended from his duties as a police officer. Subsequently, he resigned from the force two months later, effectively ending his career in law enforcement. The case was brought before Bristol Magistrates' Court on a Monday, where Geering appeared to face sentencing. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of seven years, a measure designed to monitor and restrict his activities following his conviction.

During the court proceedings in May, Geering admitted to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a minor under the age of 16 through the social media platform Snapchat. The investigation, led by SWROCU—a unit dedicated to tackling online crimes such as child abuse and exploitation—played a crucial role in identifying and apprehending him. The unit’s work involves collaboration with officers across the country to combat online offences involving vulnerable children.

As part of his sentencing, Geering is required to undertake 30 days of rehabilitation programs aimed at addressing his behaviour. Additionally, he must complete 80 hours of unpaid community service, which is intended to contribute positively to society and demonstrate accountability for his actions.

Temporary Detective Inspector Alex Spargo from SWROCU provided insight into how Geering was caught. He explained, “Barry Geering believed he was communicating with a child when he used Snapchat to engage in sexual communications. Thanks to the diligent work of our team, he was quickly identified and arrested. It is also important to note that he no longer holds a position within the police force.”

Wiltshire Police’s Chief Constable, Catherine Roper, expressed her strong disapproval of Geering’s conduct. She stated, “I am appalled by the actions of this former officer.” She emphasized that such behaviour undermines public trust and confidence in the police force. Roper further added, “The heinous crime for which he has been sentenced is completely contrary to the values we uphold. Our primary goal remains to protect society’s most vulnerable and ensure everyone’s safety.”
