92-YEAR-OLD MAN SENTENCED FOR COLD CASE RAPE AND MURDER FROM 1967
A 92-year-old man has received a life sentence after being convicted of the rape and murder of Louisa Dunne, a widow aged 75, in the year 1967.Ryland Headley, who was 34 years old at the time, carried out the assault at her residence in Easton, Bristol, on June 28, 1967.
Her body was found by a neighbor lying on the living room floor.
The court heard that death resulted from asphyxiation caused by strangulation and pressure applied to her mouth.
Justice Mr.
Sweeting described the attack as “pitiless and cruel,” adding that Headley had displayed “no remorse” for his crimes.
In 2023, forensic evidence revealed DNA signatures linking Headley to the offense with a likelihood of one in a billion, leading to his conviction.
This case stood out as the United Kingdom’s longest-standing unresolved cold case.
During proceedings, it was disclosed that Headley had premeditated the crime, intending to rape Mrs.
Dunne before forcibly breaking into her home and assaulting her severely.
The court also referenced Headley's previous conviction for two counts of rape in 1977, during which he broke into homes and assaulted elderly women in a manner similar to the attack on Mrs.
Dunne.
The victim, described as a vulnerable elderly woman living alone, was mourned by her family.
Her granddaughter, Mary Dainton, delivered a victim impact statement, expressing profound grief and outlining the emotional hardship endured by her family.
The judge imposed a minimum prison sentence of 20 years on Headley, stating, “You will never be released.
You will die in prison.” The police compiled evidence from archived materials, notably DNA samples taken from the skirt Mrs.
Dunne wore on the night of her murder.
Detective Inspector Dave Marchant commended the strength of the victim’s family and highlighted that Headley’s eventual justice came after 58 years.
