2008: KATES HILL TEEN JAILED FOR MANSLAUGHTER
A teenager from Kates Hill has been sentenced to seven years in prison after stabbing his mother’s boyfriend to death during a confrontation fueled by alcohol.At Wolverhampton Crown Court, 18-year-old Ashley Lovekin from Bunns Lane was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter through a unanimous jury decision.
Lance Hamilton, 33, who was living with Joanne Perry—Lovekin’s mother—died after suffering a stab wound to the heart during a struggle with Lovekin following a family drinking outing at pubs in Dudley.
Lovekin told the court that the incident happened quickly, describing, “It all happened so quickly.
One minute we were struggling and then we weren’t.
The knife was in his chest.” During the trial, defence counsel Roger Smith QC noted that Mr.
Hamilton had previously assaulted Mrs.
Perry and had been teasing Lovekin.
He explained that Lovekin’s initial response was nonchalant, even though Hamilton had pointed a knife at him.
The fight took place near the family residence on Wolverton Road in Dudley, with Hamilton eager to fight.
Judge John Warner sentenced Lovekin on September 11, indicating that the teenager intended to inflict serious harm.
Nonetheless, the judge acknowledged the role of significant provocation.
He remarked that Lovekin was so consumed with anger and eager to confront Hamilton that he ignored others trying to separate them.
Concluding, the judge emphasized the dangers of wielding a knife in violent situations, cautioning that this case exemplifies how quickly such acts can have devastating outcomes.
