On the night of August 8 last year, Arez Omer, 40, noticed a woman walking home after a night out with friends on Hill Street.
Surveillance footage revealed that he followed her before committing a sexual assault and then walking away without incident.
The woman reported the attack to police and provided a description of the suspect, which was then distributed to CCTV operators at Dudley Council.
They succeeded in locating him and guided law enforcement officers to his whereabouts, more than two miles away on King Street in Dudley town centre.
Omer, who lives on Ivanhoe Street in Dudley, appeared before Wolverhampton Crown Court on February 4.
He admitted to charges of sexual assault and exposure, and was remanded into custody.
He received a prison sentence of 33 months on the following Friday.
