PRESTON DRIVER ASHIR SHAHID JAILED FOR FATAL RECKLESS DRIVING
A remorseless driver who hit a five-months-pregnant student and killed her baby has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.Renju Joseph, 31, was walking across a zebra crossing in Bamber Bridge, near Preston, Lancashire, when she was struck by a speeding car driven by 20-year-old Ashir Shahid A man named Ashir Shahid has been involved in a severe driving incident that resulted in the death of a pregnant woman’s unborn baby.
He was driving a Toyota Prius at speeds of up to 71mph in a 30 zone and mowed down Renju Joseph, 31, who was walking on a zebra crossing in Bamber Bridge on September 29.
She was five months pregnant at the time and was rushed to hospital where doctors performed an emergency C-section to save her baby, Olive.
Tragically, the baby did not survive.
The court heard that Shahid’s driving prior to the collision was "nothing less than appalling," with witnesses describing the speeding and erratic manner of his driving.
Video footage recovered from both his mobile phone and his passenger, his brother Sam Shahid, aged 17, showed the two laughing and singing along to music while driving dangerously.
Sam was also observed putting his feet and upper body out of the window and making gun gestures, while Ashir removed both hands from the wheel at times.
Minutes after the collision, the vehicle was abandoned and later moved to a different location.
Ashir Shahid was arrested several days later and made no comment during his police interview.
Investigations found that he searched online for “charge for hit and run human” on the night of the crash.
Additionally, a video on his Snapchat showed him singing and laughing to the song "It Wasn’t Me" by Shaggy.
His brother, Sam Shahid, also recorded a voice note rapping: “Ran that b**** over, baby got packed.
She still not woke up, she still asleep.” Shahid pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving and was sentenced to 13 years in prison.
He is also banned from driving for 15 years and one month, and he must pass an extended retest.
His brother Sam received a three-year detention after pleading guilty to assisting an offender.
The court described Shahid’s driving as “a prolonged and persistent course of dangerous driving,” with the judge stating that Shahid’s actions “are nothing less than appalling,” and highlighting his lack of remorse and engagement in cover-up operations after the incident.
The court also condemned their behavior as “arrogant, selfish and shameless,” emphasizing the danger posed to multiple people and the community as a whole.
