ANYA SHEARS AND TYLER THORNTON FROM PENRITH CAUSE HORRIFIC ANIMAL SUFFERING

In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community of Penrith, two individuals, Anya Shears, aged 23, and Tyler Thornton, aged 25, both residents of Carleton Hall Walk, found themselves at the center of a serious animal welfare investigation. The pair faced charges after it was revealed that they had caused significant and unnecessary suffering to a dog under their care, a case that has drawn widespread condemnation and highlighted issues of animal neglect in the area.

On June 24, 2024, police officers responded to a distress call concerning the welfare of a dog at Shears’ residence. Upon arrival, they encountered a distressing scene: a large dog, visibly emaciated and in poor health, was found in the living room of the property. The environment was deplorable, with no furniture present, a filthy dog’s bed devoid of stuffing, and feces scattered across the floor. The officers immediately suspected that the dog had been subjected to neglect and abuse, prompting a follow-up visit the very next day.

During the subsequent inspection, police conducted a thorough search of the property and uncovered further evidence of neglect. The dog, which was later euthanized in July 2024 following veterinary assessment, was found to be severely underweight, with overgrown nails and matted fur, indicating a prolonged period of poor care. The veterinary examination confirmed that the animal was in a critical state, suffering from malnutrition and neglect. The authorities suspected that the dog had been deprived of proper nutrition, exercise, and hygiene for an extended period.

Both Shears and Thornton were arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, a charge under section four of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. Their arrest was part of a broader investigation into the conditions at their residence. The case was brought before Carlisle Magistrates Court, where both individuals pleaded guilty to the charges on December 31, 2024. In addition to the animal cruelty charges, they were also convicted of possessing cannabis, adding to the severity of their legal troubles.

Sentencing reflected the gravity of their actions. Shears and Thornton received eight weeks in custody, though this sentence was suspended for twelve months, allowing them to avoid immediate imprisonment under certain conditions. Furthermore, they were handed a five-year ban from keeping any animals, a measure designed to prevent future incidents of neglect. The case was described by police officials as a shocking example of animal cruelty, with PC Stewart Green of the Eden Neighbourhood Policing Team emphasizing the seriousness of the offense. He stated, “This was an awful and shocking case of animal neglect. Shears and Thornton failed a dog in their care, leaving him unsocialised, unexercised, hungry, and dirty. I hope this goes to show just how seriously we take cases of animal cruelty and neglect, and we will always strive to bring offenders before the courts.”

Overall, the case has served as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the ongoing efforts by local authorities and police to combat cruelty in the Penrith area. The community’s concern over the treatment of animals continues to be a driving force behind investigations and prosecutions aimed at protecting vulnerable creatures from neglect and abuse.
