ANYA MIAN FROM LIVERPOOL AND OLDHAM JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER YEARS ON THE RUN

In a significant development in the fight against child abuse, Anya Miah, a man with connections to both Liverpool and Oldham, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a series of heinous child sex offences. The case, which spanned over a decade, finally reached its conclusion at Liverpool Crown Court, bringing long-awaited justice to a young girl who endured years of abuse.

According to court records, Miah was convicted of 17 separate offences related to child sexual abuse, with incidents occurring over a three-year period ending in 1990. The severity and systematic nature of his actions were highlighted during the trial, which revealed a disturbing pattern of exploitation and assault. The jury, composed of six women and six men, took only an hour and a half to reach a unanimous verdict, dismissing Miah’s claims of innocence and his assertions that he had forgotten the case due to illness.

Miah, aged 52 and residing in Picton Square, Oldham, had initially been scheduled for trial in November 1998. However, he failed to appear in court, effectively evading justice for 13 years. During this period, he remained at large, avoiding prosecution and the consequences of his actions. His absence from the legal process only prolonged the suffering of the victim, who was unable to seek help or support during that time.

When Miah was finally brought to trial, he denied 16 counts of indecent assault and one charge of rape, insisting that the allegations were fabricated. He claimed that he had become ill and subsequently forgotten about the case after his original trial was set to commence in 1998. Despite his attempts to deny responsibility, the evidence presented by the prosecution was compelling and thorough.

Judge Gerald Clifton, presiding over the case, expressed his condemnation of Miah’s actions and praised the efforts of the prosecution team. The judge described the abuse as “systematic” and emphasized the emotional toll it must have taken on the victim. He stated, “On the evidence which I have heard, I am sure that very, very many times during that period, you abused her. She was unable to turn to anyone for help. I hope that she has, by these verdicts, achieved some sort of relief from the pressure she must have been subjected to all these years.”

Judge Clifton also acknowledged the diligent work of investigators and medical professionals, including retired police officers and doctors, who played a crucial role in uncovering the case after years of silence and concealment. Miah, who was formerly associated with Toxteth, Liverpool, showed no visible emotion as the verdict was read, assisted by a translator during the proceedings. His conviction marks a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to bring justice to victims of child sexual abuse, especially those who have endured years of silence and suffering.
