ANMOL CHANA SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR BRUTAL DOUBLE MURDER IN OLDBURY, WEST MIDLANDS

A 26-year-old man named Anmol Chana has been handed a life sentence with a minimum term of 36 years after committing a savage double murder in the town of Oldbury, located within the West Midlands region. The heinous crime took place inside the victims' home, where Chana launched a violent assault on his mother, Jasbir Kaur, aged 52, and her husband, Rupinder Bassan, aged 51. The court heard that during this brutal attack, Chana used a knife to inflict multiple stab wounds, with each victim suffering over 20 separate injuries. The attack was described as both 'horrific' and 'ferocious,' highlighting the extreme violence involved in the incident.

Following the murders, Chana did not attempt to hide his actions. Instead, he stole from his victims, taking personal belongings during the chaos. After the crime, he went to a local pub, where he engaged in planning his escape. Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Chana contacted an escort and played pool at the pub, indicating a level of premeditation and a desire to distract himself from the gravity of his actions. Subsequently, he booked a flight to Italy, attempting to leave the country and evade justice.

The presiding judge, Mark Wall QC, was highly critical of Chana’s conduct and attitude. He condemned the defendant for displaying a 'complete lack of remorse' and emphasized the severity of the crime by ordering that Chana serve at least 36 years behind bars before being eligible for parole. The court dismissed Chana’s claims of self-defense, which he had used to justify his actions. The judge pointed out that the allegations of childhood abuse, which Chana claimed to have experienced, were false and appeared to be an attempt to garner sympathy from the jury. During the trial, it was also revealed that Chana had a troubling history of threats directed at his family members and had developed a fascination with knives from the age of 16, which may have contributed to the violence.

The tragic victims, Jasbir Kaur and Rupinder Bassan, suffered extensive injuries, each enduring more than 20 stab wounds, which ultimately led to their deaths. Their daughter expressed her profound grief, stating, 'Not a day goes by when I don't think about them or what they went through.' The court noted that on the day of the murders, Chana was staying at his mother’s house before he contacted an escort and booked a flight out of the country, indicating premeditation and a clear intent to escape justice.

In delivering his verdict, Judge Wall QC stated, 'You claimed to the jury that you had killed them in self-defense, but the truth was very different. I am sure that the allegations you made about childhood abuse were false and designed to garner jury sympathy for you; these are allegations born of pure fantasy.' The case has left the community in Oldbury and the wider West Midlands region shaken, as the details of the brutal murders and the defendant’s cold-blooded actions continue to resonate with the public.
