ANGUS THOMPSON SHOCKS NEWCASTLE WITH SUNSHINE STROLL AFTER SEX OFFENDERS REGISTER REMOVAL
In a surprising turn of events, Angus Thompson, a convicted sex offender from Cowgate, Newcastle, was seen enjoying a leisurely walk in the sunshine, raising concerns among local residents and authorities alike. This occurrence comes after Thompson successfully argued in court that he was no longer a threat to the community and should be removed from the Sex Offenders Register.Back in May 2012, Thompson, aged 60, made headlines when he was photographed taking advantage of the warm weather, strolling freely in Newcastle. His legal victory, which took place approximately 15 months prior, allowed him to be removed from the register, a move that has sparked widespread debate about the safety of the community and the adequacy of current monitoring systems.
Thompson’s case was notable because he claimed to be suffering from severe health issues, including arthritis and a heart condition, which he argued rendered him incapable of posing any risk to children. In court, he stated, “I can hardly get about. I’ve arthritis and a heart problem — I may be in a wheelchair within months.” Despite these claims, there was no visible sign of disability aid during his recent outing. Witnesses observed Thompson boarding a bus near his residence on the outskirts of Newcastle, then wandering through the city center, including several amusement arcades.
He appeared to move with ease, showing no signs of physical impairment, and was seen spending part of his weekly £100 Incapacity Benefit on fruit machines, seemingly enjoying his day out without concern. This behavior has raised questions about the legitimacy of his health claims and the safety of community members.
Thompson, whose full name is Angus Aubrey Thompson, was previously convicted in 1996 for two counts of indecent assault against a girl, along with other assault charges, and was sentenced to five years in prison. He also inflicted grievous bodily harm on an individual named Neil. His criminal history is well-documented, and he is formally known to have served time for these offenses.
Despite his past, Thompson now contends that he is the victim of a violation, claiming that being on the Sex Offenders’ Register has caused him significant stress. He believes that his removal from the list is justified and that he no longer poses a threat to the community.
However, Neil, Thompson’s 29-year-old son, remains deeply concerned about his father’s potential risk. Neil expressed his fears, stating, “I wouldn’t even trust him around my own kids. It’s a joke that they gave him the green light to come off the register. And it’s rubbish about the wheelchair — these pictures clearly show he doesn’t need one.”
Thompson’s legal victory was based on an appeal to the Supreme Court, which allowed offenders to apply for removal from the register after 15 years following their release from prison. Since Thompson was released in 2000, he could potentially be removed from the list in just three years. Neil warned that if this happens, “there’ll be no checks on him at all. He could go underground and slip off the map,” highlighting ongoing concerns about community safety and the effectiveness of current legal measures.
