A Barnsley man, Andrew Welsh, aged 30, of Poplar Terrace, Royston, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after being found guilty of committing sex attacks on three children aged between two and eight years old.The offences, including rape, were carried out between 2003 and 2009.
Detective Constable Jo Chambers from South Yorkshire Police stated that Welsh was convicted of eight counts of rape and sexual assaults involving three girls at the time of the offences.
Welsh pleaded not guilty, leading to a trial where the victims testified in court, which was described as a traumatic experience for them.
Chambers praised their bravery, stating, "Welsh was convicted of eight counts of rape and sexual assaults of three girls, aged between two and eight years old at the time of the offences.
Welsh pleaded not guilty to all the offences and the case went to trial, resulting in the victims having to go through the difficult and harrowing ordeal of giving evidence in court.
When victims go through this process, it is a traumatic experience and I would like to praise them for their bravery.
They have shown immense courage and strength and I hope that knowing Welsh is behind bars will go some way towards helping them move forward."
